titleOfInvention Method and apparatus for protecting electrical components from transient electromagnetic disturbances
abstract SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides a method for protecting a component using an intentionally created impedance mismatch between a conductive impedance transition element and a power line. The method includes coupling a plurality of conductive impedance transition elements having a larger diameter than the power line at a location between the component and the extended length of the power line. The difference between the diameter of the conductive transition element and the power line causes an intentional impedance mismatch between the adjacent portion of the power line and two or more impedance transition elements, and due to the impedance mismatch, the high frequency of the transient electromagnetic signal induced in the power line by the transient electrical disturbance. The component is reflected away from the protective component by at least one of the two or more impedance transition elements.
