The present disclosure relates to bio-based metal-working fluid (MWF) compositions and methods of making the same, and more particularly to metal-working fluids comprising a bio-based lubricant having improved emulsion stability. At least 50 wt % of the base oil component in the MWF concentrate is plant-derived liquid decarboxylated rosin acid oil (“DCR”). The DCR is 50-100 wt% of a tricyclic compound having 18-20 carbon atoms, at least one C=C group, and an m/z (mass/charge) value of 220-280; oxygen content of less than 5%; and an acid number of <10 mg KOH/g. The resulting MWF is characterized as having comparable but not better performance compared to MWFs containing only mineral oil (eg, Group I or Group II). |
