The present invention provides an impregnated catalyst based on copper tetramine salts comprising a metal or metal oxide on a support as hydrogenation catalyst, in particular an impregnation catalyst obtainable by an incipient wetness process, comprising the steps of: (I) at least a metal or wherein copper oxide (especially CuO) is present and the mole fraction of Cu, based on all metals present, ranges from 0.75 to 1, wherein the support comprises a shaped silicon dioxide shaped body or a silicon carbide shaped body; (II) optionally activating the hydrogenation catalyst by treatment with hydrogen in the absence of an aromatic nitro compound; and (III) reacting the aromatic nitro compound with hydrogen optionally in the presence of an activated hydrogenation catalyst to obtain the aromatic amine. |
