Novel theta defensin analogs |
abstract |
Novel peptide analogs of [theta]-defensins have been developed that provide a biphasic effect in treating infection and/or sepsis. These analogs have activity even at concentrations lower than those necessary to provide a bactericidal or bacteriostatic effect, and initially summon effector cells of the immune system to resolve infectious organisms and then modulate the immune system, thereby reducing the risk of sepsis and septic shock. down-regulates the features of the inflammatory response; These novel [theta]-defensin analogs are protective even at concentrations where naturally occurring [theta]-defensins have no apparent effect, and contain a key set of structural and sequence properties not found in native [theta]-defensins. |
