This disclosure discusses chiral dopants for liquid crystal materials. The chiral dopant may be a bioreactive compound, ie, a compound produced from a microorganism through fermentation. Chiral dopants may also include bioreactive materials that are further modified by chemical synthesis steps. Chiral compounds discussed herein include glycyrrhetic acid (1), S-narigenin (4), shikimic acid (3), alpha-phellandrene (4), betulin (5), malic acid (6), valene biomolecules such as sen (7), or nootkatone (8), and any stereoisomers or chemically modified derivatives thereof. The present disclosure also shows the optical properties of these compounds in liquid crystal materials. |
