The present invention provides unique therapeutic and diagnostic antibodies that bind to regions of the tau protein that contribute to the initiation and propagation of pathological tau-tau interactions, as well as fragments, portions, derivatives and variants thereof, and methods of making them. The present invention also relates to methods of using such antibodies for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and related tauopathy. The present invention also provides methods for the prophylactic and therapeutic treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative tauopathy. The method involves injection of an antibody and/or peptide vaccine that induces an immune response against the pathological tau protein and tau deposits in the brain of the patient. Suitable vaccines represent tau peptides having one or more of the tau therapeutic epitopes provided herein. |
