The hydrogenation catalyst comprises copper oxide, an alkali metal, and acid stabilized silica, and the hydrogenation catalyst has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (“BET”) surface area of at least about 15 m 2 /g. Hydrogenation catalysts are effective in converting aldehydes, ketones, and esters to alcohols and/or diesters to diols. |
