The present invention provides a method of inhibiting the effect of a toxic injury to an organ in a subject, such as ischemia-reperfusion injury, comprising administering zinc or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, such as zinc chloride, to a subject in need thereof. and wherein the zinc or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is administered intravascularly in an amount sufficient to inhibit the effects of toxic damage. |
