abstract The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating autoimmune diseases comprising human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells as an active ingredient. The human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells of the present invention do not show toxicity and inhibit the production of anti-dsDNA antibodies, proteinuria and total IgG, inhibit the proliferation of T cells and B cells, and suppress the expression of cytokines in T cells. It exhibits preventive or therapeutic efficacy against autoimmune diseases. Lupus causes inflammation in the kidneys by autoantibodies and immune complexes, and the infiltration of immune cells increases. When the human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells of the present invention are administered, lupus reduces the infiltration of immune cells into the kidneys.
