abstract Disclosed is a nanoporous open cell foam or wick structure and a manufacturing method. Nanoporous foam or wick structures are produced from thermoplastic or thermosetting polymer gels with the gelling solvent removed to preserve an extended monolithic gel structure composed of, for example, entangled or chemically crosslinked polymer molecular fibrils. The nanoporous foam or wick may comprise a freestanding structure or may be incorporated into a microporous open cell foam or wick material to be converted into a nanoporous cell material having a bipore structure. These resulting nanoporous polymeric materials are unique that can be utilized to create superior insulation for high performance capillary pump loops or heat pipe thermal management systems, cryogenic storage vessels without low evaporation sloshes, and systems operating in ambient and elevated pressure conditions.
