abstract The present invention relates to a polycyclic aromatic compound represented by the following formula (1). According to the present invention, a novel compound useful as a material for an organic device such as an organic electroluminescent device is provided. In the formula, ring A and ring C are aryl rings having a substituent such as halogen, ring B and ring D are aryl rings, etc., at least one hydrogen in these rings may be substituted, and X 1 , X 2 , X 3 and X 4 are >O, >NR, etc., and R of >NR is an aryl which may be substituted, and is bonded to the ring A, ring B, ring C, and/or ring D by a linking group or a single bond. May be performed, and R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen or the like.
