Herein, pancreatic cells are differentiated into CD133/Ki-67-positive activated islet proliferative cells (AIPC) for functional insulin production derived from isolated pancreatic islets, and islet-derived AIPC is tested in vitro using a culture medium containing an active agent. Compositions and methods are disclosed for expanding in culture within. Also disclosed herein is the use of AIPCs for implantation in mammals for in vivo therapy, particularly pancreatic diseases including type 1 diabetes. |
