Dehydration of alpha-, beta-dihydroxycarbonyl compounds and decomposition into lactic acid and other products |
abstract |
A method for synthesizing a cracked product from a starting substrate having a carbonyl functional group (C=O) and having a hydroxy-substituted carbon atom at the alpha (α) and beta (β) positions for the carbonyl functional group is Is initiated. In one embodiment, the α-, β-dihydroxy carboxylic acid or carboxylate is dehydrated to convert the α-hydroxy group to a second carbonyl group and remove the β-hydroxy group to dicarbonyl Forms an intermediate. The dicarbonyl intermediate is decomposed to form a decomposition product in which the first and second carbonyl groups are preserved. Either or both of the (i) cracking product and (ii) the second cracking product resulting from the cleavage of the carbon-carbon bond of the dicarbonyl intermediate may be hydrogenated to form further products. |
