Adsorption-based fuel system for in-vehicle cetane and octane on demand |
abstract |
A vehicle propulsion system, a vehicle fuel system, and a method of operating an internal combustion engine are provided. The separation unit constituting part of the fuel system includes one or more adsorbent based chambers so that the separation unit can selectively receive at least a portion of the in-vehicle fuel and separate it into octane enriched and cetane enriched components. The regeneration of the adsorbate takes place through a heat exchange relationship with the existing system infrastructure. The controller can be used to determine the specific operating conditions of the internal combustion engine, such that in-vehicle fuel is transferred to one or more combustion chambers in the internal combustion engine without first passing through the separation unit, or instead the internal combustion engine generates an octane-rich or cetane-rich mixture. In situations where it may be necessary, portions of the adsorption and residue taken from the separation unit can be transferred to the separation unit in situations where they can be stored in a separate tank for later mixing and use within the combustion chamber. |
