abstract The present invention suggests an article having a metal layer and a glass layer, and a method of preventing or reducing a chemical reaction between the metal layer and the glass layer. The article of the present invention has a barrier layer disposed between the metal layer and the glass layer. The barrier layer comprises alumina and phosphate. Phosphates include aluminum dihydrate phosphate, aluminum containing phosphate, phosphates of elements of the metal layer, phosphates of elements of the glass layer, or combinations thereof. The method of the present invention includes the step of disposing a barrier layer between the metal layer and the glass layer.
