abstract |
The present invention relates to a modified foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) 3C protease, generally by mutating a polynucleotide sequence encoding a foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) 3C protease. The modified FMDV protease exhibits proteolytic activity against the FMDV P1 precursor protein and exhibits a decrease in one or more toxic or inhibitory properties associated with the unmodified FMDV 3C protease in a recombinantly producing host cell. A vector carrying a polynucleotide encoding a modified FMDV 3C protease sequence may induce the production of FMDV virus-like particles in the host cell when expressed in the host cell. The modified FMDV 3C protease can be used to produce an immunogenic FMDV preparation that is capable of inducing an immune response to FMDV as a whole. |
