titleOfInvention Dark chrome-based complex
abstract The aqueous trivalent chromium electrolyte comprising trivalent chromium ions and amino acids results in a dark tint in the plated trivalent chromium coating on the substrate. The amino acids disclosed herein include cationic side chains and are at least essentially free of sulfur. The cationic side chain of the amino acid further comprises nitrogen. These amino acids produce significantly darker trivalent chromium deposits when used in trivalent chromium electrolytes. Trivalent chromium electrolytes are used in a method to produce a desired dark tint in a trivalent chromium coating formed on a substrate using electrodeposition.
