Thereby rendering the hydrophobic surface hydrophilic. Hydrophobic binders, typically silicone compounds, such as siloxanes, attach hydrophilic sol-gel particles to surfaces such as hydrophobic regions of silicone contact lenses. The hydrophilic region is preferably not modified. The binder can be attached to the particle through the functional group and attached to the hydrophobic surface automatically. The coating of the composition can be adhered from the solution at ambient or room temperature to enable coating of the heat-sensitive substrate. Such coatings can withstand heating (e.g., sterilization) in acidic solutions while maintaining their hydrophilicity. |
