The invention relates to a binding moiety that specifically binds to the conformational epitope of C5a, particularly human C5a. A preferred binding moiety is an anti-C5a antibody that binds to the structural epitope. The binding moieties disclosed herein are useful for the treatment and prevention of various acute and chronic diseases, particularly acute inflammatory diseases such as systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and different degrees of sepsis including sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock.
