The deleterious activity of a target gene, including extended nucleotide repeat (NR) mutations (e. G., Toxicity and / or dysfunction of the product encoded by such target gene) can be detected in a number of different ways, (And, in some cases, by differentially reducing, including selectively reducing) the production or activity of toxic expression products (e. G., RNA or protein) encoded by the target gene. Kits and compositions for use in the practice of the method are also provided.
