The invention basically comprises the steps of: (i) generating a sample infrared spectrum representative of a blood sample, each having one or more spectral components having wave number and absorbance values; (ii) providing a reference database of a spectral model, wherein each model has at least one database spectral component of a wave number and an absorbance value, said database spectral component identifying a pathogen; (iii) measuring whether one or more database spectral components correspond to one or more sample spectral components, and (iv) compiling a list of the identified corresponding database elements, in order to detect pathogens in the blood. Detectable pathogens may include blood origin infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B or hepatitis (HBV, HCV), and malaria parasites (plasmodium). |
