Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to coating materials comprising silicon and / or aluminum, hydrogen and any two or more of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and fluorine. The coating material exhibits a hardness of at least about 17 GPa and an optical band gap of at least about 3.5 eV. In some embodiments, the coating material comprises silicon and / or aluminum in an amount of about 40 or more in atomic%, hydrogen in an amount in a range of about 1 to about 25, nitrogen in an amount of at least about 30, a quantity in a range of about 0 to about 7.5 Of oxygen, and carbon in an amount ranging from about 0 to about 10. The coating material may optionally comprise fluorine and / or boron. Products comprising such coating materials are also described and exhibit an average transmittance and colorlessness of greater than about 85% over optical wavelength regimes ranging from about 380 nm to about 720 nm. |
