abstract Catalysts useful for removing arsenic from hydrocarbon feedstocks are provided. The catalyst comprises an alumina support, an under-beded molybdenum and phosphorous component, and an overlay of nickel component. The catalyst has a unique property that it has a bulk nickel-to-molybdenum atomic ratio of less than 2.2 with a surface nickel-to-molybdenum atomic ratio of greater than 1.8. The nickel accessibility factor of the catalyst is greater than 1.2. The catalyst is prepared by applying a calcination step associated with a two metal impregnation step that provides a combination of an underbidden metal and an overlay of nickel.
