A method for producing a surface-modified silica nanoparticle, comprising the steps of: preparing a first silica nanoparticle dispersion containing silica nanoparticles and an aqueous dispersion medium; and mixing the aqueous dispersion medium in the first silica nanoparticle dispersion , A cyclic ester and a cyclic amide to obtain a dispersion of a second silica nanoparticle; and a step of mixing the dispersion of the second silica nanoparticles with an organic dispersion medium containing at least one species selected from the group consisting of formula (1): (Wherein R 1 is each independently a C 1 to C 20 hydrocarbon group and R 2 is a C 1 to C 3 hydrocarbon group) To the surface of the silica nanoparticles to modify the surface of the silica nanoparticles.
