titleOfInvention Side scan sonar with sea surface relection noise removal performance
abstract The present invention relates to a side scan sonar having a sea surface noise removal capability, which cancels a sea surface noise included in a seabed image and introduced through reflection at a sea surface attributable to diffusion and diffraction of sound waves generated when a tow fish passes through a thermocline layer, a region having a shallow water level, a mud layer, or sludge layer, i.e., a region at which a seabed reflection signal is weak. The side scan sonar having a sea surface noise removal capability according to the present invention comprises: active sensors which are disposed on lower portions of one or more of opposite sides of a side scan sonar; and a tow fish which is towed via a tow cable connected to a ship, which generates an ultrasonic wave via the active sensors disposed on the lower portions of one or more of the opposite sides of the side scan sonar, which receives a reflected signal via the active sensors disposed on the lower portions of one or more of the opposite sides of the side scan sonar, which converts the reflected signal into an image signal, and which transmits the image signal to a ship side. In this case, the side scan sonar further comprises one or more upper reception-dedicated sensors which are installed on upper portions of opposite sides of the tow fish, which are substantially configured to receive a signal generated when a diffracted signal is primarily or secondarily reflected at a sea surface. Furthermore, the tow fish is configured to cancel a signal received by the active sensors by using a signal received by the upper reception-dedicated sensors when the signal generated when the diffracted signal is primarily or secondarily reflected at a sea surface is simultaneously received by the active sensors and the upper reception-dedicated sensors.
