Methods of forming lithium metal oxides composed of Ni, Mn and Co useful for preparing lithium ion batteries include providing precursor microparticles of Ni and Co with particle sizes that allow for the formation of improved lithium metal oxides. The method allows the formation of lithium metal oxides with improved safety while maintaining good capacity and speed capabilities. In particular, the process allows the formation of lithium metal oxides whose primary particle surface Mn / Ni ratio exceeds bulk Mn / Ni. Likewise, the process allows the formation of lithium metal oxides by secondary particles with a higher density, allowing for higher cathode density and battery capacity while maintaining good capacity and rate performance. |
