abstract |
The present invention relates to compositions and methods for coating zirconium alloy coatings of fuel elements for waterway nuclear reactors. The coating comprises a first layer or layer, a second layer or layer. The first layer comprises an elemental metal and the second layer is an oxidation-resistant layer comprising elemental chromium. The first layer acts as an intermediate layer between the zirconium alloy substrate and the second layer. This intermediate layer may be effective to improve the adhesion of the second layer to the zirconium alloy substrate. Multilayer coatings form a protective layer that provides enhanced ability to withstand steady-state and accidental conditions in which zirconium alloy coatings are exposed in the reactor. |
