abstract The present invention, in some embodiments, relates to compounds and methods for the prevention of ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in organs, particularly for the prevention of IRI in organs 35 years of age and older. Specific uses include the prevention of IRI in the organs of the body in transplantation and transplantation of organs of donors 35 years of age and older. Additional embodiments include prevention of delayed graft renal function (DGF) in recipients of death donor kidney transplants and reduction of dialysis frequency, twinning and dialysis duration. The methods involve contacting the organ with a temporary inhibitor of p53 in vitro or ex vivo . Novel, limited-time dsNA p53 inhibitors are also provided.
