abstract An effective compact nuclear fusion reactor for use as a neutron source or energy source is described. The reactor includes an annular plasma chamber and a plasma containment system arranged to generate a magnetic field in the chamber to contain the plasma. The plasma confinement system is configured so that the main radius of the confined plasma is 1.5 m or less. The toroidal magnetic field operates at 5 T or less, and the plasma current is 5 mA or less. Nevertheless, the resulting alpha particles are blocked in the plasma.
