abstract The present invention relates to a method for converting magnesium chloride to magnesium oxide and HCl, - providing a magnesium chloride compound to a thermolytic reactor present at a temperature of at least 300 &lt; 0 &gt; C, - removing MgO from the thermal hydrolysis reactor in a solid form and removing the HCl containing gas stream from the thermal hydrolysis reactor, Here, the magnesium chloride compound provided in the thermal hydrolysis reactor is a solid magnesium chloride compound containing at least 50 wt% of MgCl 2 .4H 2 O. The method according to the present invention is quick and can be operated in an efficient manner with respect to both the associated apparatus and the energy. The process according to the invention may also be integrated into a process for the conversion of a magnesium chloride solution.
