Sulfur complexes and polymeric materials having a high sulfur content and being produced from elemental sulfur as the main chemical feedstock. The sulfur copolymer is prepared by polymerizing elemental sulfur and at least one monomer of an amine, thiol, sulfide, alkyne unsaturated monomer, nitrone, aldehyde, ketone, thiane, ethylenically unsaturated monomer or epoxide. The sulfur copolymer may be further dispersed with a metal or ceramic composite, or may be copolymerized with elemental carbon, a photoactive organic chromophore or a reactive and soluble / biocompatible moiety. The sulfur complex and the polymer material are characterized by self-recovery capability through thermal modification. Applications employing the sulfur complex and polymer materials may include electrochemical cells, optics, H 2 S donors and antimicrobial materials. |
