abstract |
A method of acid-catalyzed acylation of isohexides is described. The process involves the reaction of isohexides and excess carboxylic acids in the presence of a Lewis acid or a Bronsted acid catalyst. One or more Lewis acid and / or Bronsted acid can achieve a high conversion rate of isohexides to the corresponding mono and diesters having a much higher selectivity of exo- OH than the endo- OH of isohexides in the product have. Specific catalytic acid species include zirconium chloride (ZrCl 4 ) and phosphonic acid (H 3 PO 3 ), which exhibit a ratio of exo : endo reactivity of about 5: 1 and 4: 1, respectively. |
