abstract A method of altering the metabolic profile of fermentation by increasing the flux through acetolactate. The method comprises increasing the production of one or more products derived from acetolactate. There is further provided a method for increasing the production of 2,3-butanediol by microbial fermentation of a gaseous substrate, the method comprising reacting a compound that inhibits one or more enzymes that convert acetolactate to a branched chain amino acid for fermentation . The present invention further provides a method for increasing the production of 2,3-butanediol compared to other fermentation products such as ethanol and acetic acid.
