abstract A process for reducing aldehydes in an acetic acid manufacturing process is disclosed. Acetic acid is prepared by reacting methanol and carbon monoxide in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst. The process comprises reacting an aldehyde-containing stream with an alcohol to form an acetal-containing stream. The acetal-rich stream is separated from the acetal-containing stream and then hydrolyzed to form the hydrolysis mixture containing the alcohol and the aldehyde. The alcohol is isolated from the hydrolysis mixture and used in reaction with the aldehyde-containing stream to form an acetal-containing stream. The present invention reduces aldehydes in the acetic acid produced.
