abstract The present invention is based on the finding that, The present invention relates to a composition for protecting or treating skin cells against ultraviolet rays containing costata (Stackhouse) Batters extract (CCE) as an active ingredient, wherein the root extract of the line according to the present invention contains UVB-stimulated cells in HaCaT skin cells ROS levels and restores the expression and action of copper / zinc superoxide dismutase, catalase, and heme oxygenase-1, UVB-inhibiting antioxidant enzymes, and inhibits UVB - It can be usefully used as a raw material of functional cosmetic composition or pharmaceutical composition for protection of skin cells by ultraviolet rays by exhibiting the effect of reducing oxidative damage in operation and protecting cells from mitochondrial membrane depolarization and subsequent apoptosis.
