abstract | 5- (hydroxymethyl) furan-2-carbaldehyde (HMF) -sulfonates and methods for their preparation are described. The process comprises reacting 5- (hydroxymethyl) furfural (HMF) and a) trifluoromethanesulfonate anhydride (triflate), b) p -toluene-sulfonyl halide (tosylate) Sulfonyl halide (mesylate) with a reagent in one of a combination of 1) a nucleophilic base or 2) a non-nucleophilic base and a nucleophile. HMF-sulfonates (e.g., triflates, tosylates, mesylates, etc., analogs of HMF) can act as precursor materials from which various derivative compounds can be synthesized. |
