The present invention relates to a lithium titanate material suitable for use in electrochemical applications and a method of making the same. The material of the present invention is particularly suitable as an electrode (e.g., anode) material and a lithium ion conductive film. Thus, the materials of the present invention may find particular utility as battery material, for example, in lithium ion and / or lithium air batteries. In particular, the present invention provides a process for preparing lithium titanate wherein the precursor mixture comprises a solvent, a lithium precursor, and the titanium precursor is subjected to pyrolysis by flame spraying to produce lithium titanate particles. The inventors have confirmed that it is possible to significantly reduce the formation of the rutile impurity phase by controlling the flame spray pyrolysis process. |
