abstract The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition useful for the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases including methylene blue. Methylene blue inhibits the expression and activity of SREBP-1 (Sterol Response Element Binding Protein) through regulation of LXR-alpha activation. Therefore, methylene blue has a remarkable effect on suppression of lipogenesis gene expression and inhibition of accumulation of triglyceride in liver tissue, and thus can be effectively used for the prevention and treatment of lipidemia and lipid hepatitis caused by metabolic disorders induced by high-fat diet . Methylene blue can also be used in the prevention and treatment of diseases caused by overexpression and hyperactivity of LXR-alpha or SREBP-1.
