abstract | A method for preparing a solid catalyst component for use in a Ziegler-Natta catalyst comprises combining a porous particulate support with a hydrocarbon-soluble organomagnesium compound in a hydrocarbon solvent to form a suspension. After the organomagnesium compound is halogenated, an alcohol is added, and then the mixture is reacted with a titanium compound and then reacted with at least one diether compound to form a solid catalyst component. Thereafter, the reaction product is extracted with a mixture of a titanium compound and a hydrocarbon solvent. The recovered solid catalyst component forms a Ziegler-Natta catalyst system for the polymerization of olefins in combination with a titanium compound and a hydrocarbon solvent. In particular, catalyst systems comprising diether internal electron donors may have suitable activity and hydrogen reactions for the production of propylene polymers having a molecular weight distribution (PI (GPC)) ranging from about 5.75 to about 9. |
