Process and high surface area electrodes for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide |
abstract |
Methods and systems are provided for electrochemically converting carbon dioxide to organic products including formate salts and formic acid. The method may include, but is not limited to, steps (A) through (C). Step (A) may introduce the acidic anolyte into the first compartment of the electrochemical cell. The first compartment may comprise an anode. Step (B) can introduce the bicarbonate-based cathode liquid saturated with carbon dioxide into the second compartment of the electrochemical cell. The second compartment may comprise indium and may include a high surface area cathode having a pore volume of about 30% to 98%. At least a part of the bicarbonate-based cathode liquid is recycled. Step (C) may apply a sufficient electric potential between the anode and the cathode to reduce the carbon dioxide to at least one of the single-carbon based product or the multi-carbon based product. |
