abstract The present invention relates to a styryl divinylbenzene polymer resin having a polymer-bonded-ER 3 + X - group in which E is N, P or As, R is a hydrocarbon group and X is Cl, Br or I, To a process for producing a trihalide resin. Tri-halide ion is Cl 3 - may be -, Br 3 - or I 3. The present invention relates to a trichloride resin, and a process for preparing trichloride resin, wherein the styrene divinylbenzene polymer resin having a polymer-bonded -ER 3 + Cl - group is contacted with chlorine. The trichloride resin can be used as a solid equivalent of a chlorine gas. -ER 3 + Cl - form of the styrene-divinylbenzene resin containing a unit -ER 3 + Cl 3 - may be used to find the chlorine from a gas or a solid to form a styrene-divinylbenzene resin containing a unit.
