titleOfInvention | Process for preparing dialkyl carbonate and diol products |
abstract | The dialkyl carbonate and diol products are prepared in an integrated process. In one embodiment, the alkylene oxide is reacted with carbon dioxide in the presence of a non-hydride-containing homogeneous carbonation catalyst in a first reaction zone to form a crude cyclic carbonate product. The crude cyclic carbonate product is introduced into a second reaction zone comprising an ester exchange catalyst together with an aliphatic monohydric alcohol. The transesterification catalyst is composed of a basic type I ion exchange resin in gel form. The cyclic carbonate product and the monohydric alcohol react to form a dialkyl carbonate and diol product. In another aspect, the dialkyl carbonate and diol product are prepared in an integrated process wherein a halide-containing homogeneous carbonation catalyst is used to form a crude cyclic carbonate product that is then used in the transesterification reaction. The transesterification catalyst is regenerated to regulate the effectiveness of the halide-containing catalyst. |
