There is provided a film containing a core layer disposed adjacent to an outer layer. The core layer contains a relatively high percentage of biodegradable and regenerable thermoplastic biopolymers. Biodegradable and renewable, however, many biopolymers tend to be relatively rigid in nature. However, the present inventors have found that a film having good mechanical properties can be easily formed through selective control over the composition of the core layer and the outer layer. Above all, this is achieved by blending the biopolymer of the core layer with a polyolefin. The polyolefin is also used in the outer layer. In addition to providing the film with functionality (e.g., heat sealing, printing, etc.), the polyolefin-containing outer layer also helps offset the stiffness of the biopolymer of the core layer and assists in improving processability, rigidity and ductility. |
