A non-halogenated monomer capable of being polymerized with a flame retardant polymer, and a method for producing a monomer and a polymer. In a simplest aspect, there is provided a monomer composition which may comprise a) a group derived from one of (meth) acrylic acid, (meth) acrylamide, or vinylbenzene, b) a polyphosphate moiety, and c) an amine species. In the monomer composition, the ethylenically unsaturated monomer of (a) is covalently bonded directly or via a linking group to the moiety of b) to form a precursor monomer unit. The amine species of c) is present as a complex with the precursor monomer units. The polymer may be a homopolymer of the monomer composition or may be a copolymer of the monomer composition having variable a), b) and c). In one embodiment, the polymer may additionally comprise ethylenically unsaturated monomers that are not covalently bonded to the polyphosphate moiety. |
