abstract The process for purifying a stream composed of 1,4-butanediol comprises the steps of (a) reacting 1,4-butanediol, and γ-butyrolactone, 2- (4-hydroxybutoxy) -tetrahydrofuran, A crude product stream consisting of at least one of (4-hydroxybutyrate) and 3- (4-hydroxybutoxy) -tetrahydrofuran is fed to the first distillation column; (b) removing side draws consisting of 1,4-butanediol and light components (said light components comprising at least part of those produced by the reaction in said first distillation column); (c) passing the stream through a hydrogenation zone; (d) causing the stream from step (c) to be hydrogenated in the hydrogenation zone in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and having a reduced content of 2- (4-hydroxybutoxy) -tetrahydrofuran from the hydrogenation zone , Optionally further recovering a 1,4-butanediol product stream comprising (4-hydroxybutyl) -4-hydroxybutyrate formed by reaction of? -Butyrolactone; (e) passing the 1,4-butanediol product stream from step (d) through a second distillation column operative to remove (4-hydroxybutyl) -4-hydroxybutyrate as a bottom stream, Removing the butanediol stream as an overhead; (f) passing the overhead stream removed in step (e) through a third distillation column to recover the purified 1,4-butanediol stream.
