abstract |
An apparatus for use in a heterogeneous catalytic reaction, the apparatus comprising: a column reactor configured to hold a predetermined volume of liquid and solid catalyst particles thereon, respectively, and including a plurality of trays mounted over one another; Means for introducing the liquid reactant onto the top tray; Means for introducing the gas phase reactant under the bottom tray; Means for removing a stream of liquid phase reaction from below said bottom tray; Means for removing a stream after gaseous reaction from the top tray; Vapor elevation means configured to allow vapor to flow from the bottom into the tray and associated with each tray; An underflow means configured to remove liquid from the tray and the column reactor from the lower tray prior to introducing liquid into the column reactor, wherein the underflow means is associated with each tray; Means for temporarily guiding the liquid removed from the tray to bypass at least one lower tray and reintroducing the liquid into the column reactor at a tray located below the at least one bypass tray; Means for removing liquid and catalyst from the at least one bypassed tray; And means for replacing the liquid and catalyst inventory on the at least one bypassed tray. |
