There is disclosed an inorganic nanoparticle surface coated polymeric film product having improved, e.g., improved metallization capabilities, low cost, low polymer additive and modifier, improved regeneration, and good web properties. Also disclosed is a method for priming a flexible film substrate to improve the reactivity or wettability of the substrate for metallization. The substrate film is coated with one or more nanolayers of metal or metal oxide applied by CCVD and / or PECVD in an open atmosphere. The deposited coating improves the surface energy of the film substrate and also acts to reduce the surface gauge change of the substrate or support film thereby improving the wettability of the film substrate for metallization and / do.
