abstract |
Embodiments of the present invention include an article, an authentication method and apparatus, and a method of manufacturing an article. The article includes a substrate having a first luminescent element and a non-intrinsic feature having a second luminescent element located proximate to a portion of the article surface. The first and second luminescent patterns produce emissions in the overlapping emission bands as a result of exposure to excitation energy. Above the non-intrinsic feature, the substrate and non-intrinsic feature emission are combined in the superimposed emission zone to produce a "confused" emission that is distinguishable from the substrate emission taken alone. The authentication system determines, in the zone corresponding to the "substrate-only" zone of the real article, whether emissions with the first emission characteristics are detected in the overlapping emission zone. The system also determines if confused emissions are detected in the overlapping emission bands, in a zone corresponding to the "non-intrinsic feature" zone of the real article. |
