abstract | The polycarbonate production method polymerizes an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a diaryl carbonate by melt polymerization in the presence of a polymerization catalyst and the dihydroxy compound, the diaryl carbonate and a diaryl carbonate by-product. Generating a byproduct vapor stream comprising: adding a low vapor pressure compound to the byproduct vapor stream to produce a modified byproduct vapor stream, introducing the modified byproduct vapor stream to a separation unit, and the Removing volatile diaryl carbonate byproducts from the reformed byproduct vapor stream in the separation unit to form a treated byproduct stream and returning the treated byproduct stream to the polymerization reaction. Alternatively, the low vapor pressure compound may be added directly to the separation unit. |
