Sustainable local anesthetic composition, preferably comprising a sugar ester such as SAI |
abstract |
The present invention relates to a novel anesthetic composition containing a nonpolymeric carrier material and an anesthetic, wherein the composition provides continuous local anesthesia without initial overrelease and is suitable to have a duration of at least about 24 hours. Certain compositions are also provided that include a first anesthetic and a second anesthetic. In the composition, the second anesthetic provides an initial anesthetic effect upon administration to the subject and is a solvent for the first anesthetic. The nonpolymeric carrier may optionally be a high viscosity liquid carrier material such as a suitable sugar ester. The composition may further comprise one or more additional ingredients, including active and inactive materials. Also provided are methods of using the compositions of the present invention to produce a sustained anesthetic effect at a site of a subject. |
